Sunday, February 20, 1944 marked the start of "Big Week" - a series of attacks directed at German aircraft plants and air fields.  It was during this period that the first of the massive thousand plane raids began.  It also marked the first blood-letting of the 445th.  A series of unrelated but intertwined events resulted in the 445th going on to a target without fighter cover.  In a two and a half hour gunfight, the 445th lost more than half of its attacking force to enemy fighters.
