This section will show what life was like back in United States while the men
and women of the Armed Forces were off to war. For the first time, women were
given the opportunity to step in and do heavy work outside of the home. War Bond
tours were started, bringing heroes of combat action back to the United States
to help spur production in the war industry plants.
Scrap drives,
rationing of meat, dairy products, gasoline, ration coupons - all of these were
things that the American public put up with during the war years. Blue Star
families - those with sons, daughters, husbands, wives who were serving in the
military - dreaded seeing that military sedan pull up the the front of the house
and seeing a service member and the local minister get out of the vehicle.
Here are some
examples of posters that decorated the workplace, asking workers to work smarter
and buy war bonds.
